BRANSON MO NEWS: A pair of Branson High School graduates returned to their alma matter during the week, with a message of being a leader in the 21st century.
Cecelia Givens, a cadet at West Point and 2015 Branson graduate, along with her sister Lucy Givens, an Army ROTC cadet at the University of Missouri and 2013 Branson graduate, shared their experiences on how having a plan for the future with a matching work ethic can lead to great things.
“I want them to see they are capable of whatever they put their mind to,” Cecilia Givens said. “No matter where they come from, they can do anything. You have to make that door of opportunity, because sometimes it’s not going to be there.”
Speaking to students at every grade level, the sisters said they wanted to make sure each student knew their future was up to them.
“It’s about taking accountability for your own future,” Lucy Givens added. “People can help you, but at the end of the day it’s up to you to talk to the recruiter, it’s up to you to go to all of your classes in college.”
The pair also shared how their experiences at the high school helped prepare them for their collegiate career.
“I had teachers, especially in English and math, if they wouldn’t have sat down with me and explain ‘this is how you write a paper, this is how you do this equation,’ I wouldn’t have known,” Cecelia Givens said. “At West Point, you start off writing 10-page research papers, and I went back to the stuff (high school teachers) taught me and the stuff they sat down with me for hours.”
