Local Recognition for Veterans in Branson, Springfield

BRANSON MO NEWS: Published 11/11 2016 11:44AM Updated 11/11 2016 11:45AM SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Veterans and active-military members are honored in the Ozarks today with parades, a breakfast, and special programs.The day began at dawn with a ceremony at College of the Ozarks near Branson and included an annual veterans breakfast hosted by Missouri State University in Springfield. The breakfast event welcomed all veterans but specifically honored Vietnam-era vets to recognize the 50th anniversary of that conflict.   Later in the morning, the Missouri Pride Band performed military songs.  Veteran Melvin Cole says the holiday always stirs an emotional reaction because he remembers the men lost during his service.  “We lost 27 men in one day. That were men that worked together and fought aside together for our country. So I’m here in regards to remembering and honoring them all.” Springfield’s annual Veterans Day parade was held last Saturday.  But in Branson, thousands of people crowded into the downtown area, many coming from across the country, to watch or take part in the 83rd annual Branson Veterans Day Parade.         This is believed to be one of the largest, if not the largest, Veterans Day parades in the nation.
