Cole and Heidi Hamels donated their entire property near Branson, Missouri, to a charity that helps individuals with special needs overcome adversity.
The holiday season is one in which gifts are given between friends, and those who are able to do so often make donations to charitable causes. But one Major League Baseball pitcher is making an incredible gift this year: his mansion.
Texas Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi, are donating the 32,000-square-foot mansion, worth around $9.75 million, to Camp Barnabas, a non-profit group that helps children with special needs and chronic illness. It is the largest donation ever made to the organization.
“Our mission is to change lives through disability ministry, and we’ve been strategically looking for ways to expand our ministry outside of a summer camp,” Jason Brawner, CEO of the faith-based group, said in a statement. “We have no doubt that this gift will allow us to do just that.”
The mansion, which was built in 2012, sits atop Table Rock Lake near Branson, Missouri. In addition to the immense size of the building itself, the Hamels’ property includes more than 1,700 feet of shoreline along the lake. In all, the property includes more than 100 acres of land.
Each year, Camp Barnabas helps thousands of people who have special needs or chronic illness. The camp was established more than 20 years ago and assists those who attend with learning “life skills,” including “cleaning, making breakfast, setting the table and washing cloths.” The camp also helps attendees learn interpersonal skills, such as public speaking, according to a report from the Monnett Times in 2013.
