READ ORIGINAL ARTICLE HERENEW UPDATE:A Pevely man reeled in the latest state record catch from Table Rock Lake.Anthony Schnur, Jr. caught a 32-pound, 10-ounce longnose gar from the lake April 7. This catch breaks the previous record of 27 pounds from 1999, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. This makes the fourth state record fish caught in 2021.This catch is significant for Schnur after a dear friend died, he told MDC.“I had a good buddy of 30 years who passed away,” Schnur said. “The funny thing is his wife called me that morning with the news. And she asked me to do her a favor and catch a fish in his name.”More:Fisherman breaks state and world records with spotted gar catch in southeast MissouriSchnur and his girlfriend, Cindy Dennison, went to his friend’s favorite fishing spot, originally intending to catch some crappie. Dennison spotted the gar and Schnur was able to catch it.”It’s absolutely unreal,” Schnur said.Longnose gar are likely to be found in every major stream across Missouri. They are the most abundant gar, found in clear Ozark streams and are prominent in the large Ozark reservoirs, according to MDC.MDC staff verified Schnur’s fish on a certified scale at Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery in Branson.“I really hope to mount this fish in my friend’s memory,” Schnur said. “I think it would be a beautiful way to honor him.”Missouri state record fish are recognized in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods.
