BRANSON MISSOURI NEWS: A meteorologist from the National Weather Service discussed a weather preparedness initiative to more than 140 attendees at the Hollister Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon Thursday.
“Today we are talking about how to become a weather-ready nation ambassador,” said Andy Foster, a meteorologist and lead forecaster for the National Weather Service.
“In other words, how can you within your community take part in preparing for and responding to national disasters, specifically to weather hazards.”
Working together as a community in all areas including academia, broadcast media, emergency management and private/public businesses is the foundation to being prepared for a natural disaster Foster said.
Due to the state’s geography, Missouri is susceptible to natural disasters such as ice storms, tornadoes, severe storms and flooding, according to Missouri State Emergency Management Agency. Missouri has received more than 30 federal major disaster declarations since 1990, according to SEMA.
“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,” Foster said.
The Weather-Ready Nation initiative “is about helping our nation become more resilient to increasing extreme weather, water and climate events,” according to a brochure by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
