ST. LOUIS • Missouri Democratic Party officials say they will file a request with federal financial regulators this week to investigate Republican gubernatorial nominee Eric Greitens’ receipt of an almost $2 million campaign donation through a non-profit corporation.The move comes on a heels of a Post-Dispatch analysis Wednesday of the $1.975 million donation. It came to Greitens in July, after being routed through the non-profit corporation and a federal superPAC in a way that prevents the original source of the money from ever being publicly disclosed.State Democratic Chairman Roy Temple said in a conference call with reporters Wednesday that the convoluted path the money took is suspicious, because Missouri law would have allowed the original donor to simply hand a check to Greitens’ campaign.
Greitens “went to great lengths to make this $2 million contribution a secret,” said Temple. “The only reason you would go through that exercise is if you were trying to conceal the initial source of the funding.”Temple said the party will ask the Securities & Exchange Commission to investigate whether the donation was made in violation of “pay to play” rules that bar certain financial services entities from donating to political candidates.Temple left open the …
