Missouri’s race for governor pits long experience against fresh perspective

In a political era defined by intractable partisanship, Missouri’s gubernatorial matchup carries some irony: Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster, who is a former Republican, faces Republican and former Navy SEAL Eric Greitens, who is an ex-Democrat.That twist notwithstanding, Missouri voters going to the polls Tuesday should have no trouble distinguishing between the two candidates, whose policy prescriptions hew closely to their opposing party platforms — and whose political personas should look familiar to strategists on both sides.In Koster, Democrats are banking on what has worked for them in conservative-leaning Missouri before: a mainstream moderate who touts a deep political résumé, campaigns on competence and steers clear of his national party’s ideological skirmishes.
“The governor of Missouri is not an entry-level job,” Koster says in one ad, a central theme that he repeats regularly in interviews and on the stump.Republicans, in choosing someone with myriad accomplishments but zero political experience, are hoping Greitens can ride the “outsider” lane to victory.
