BRANSON MO NEWS: Needing a win to extend its season, the Missouri baseball team used a six-run seventh inning to pull away from Tennessee in an 8-3 victory in the home finale at Taylor Stadium.With the win, the Tigers (34-21, 12-18 Southeastern Conference) clinched the final spot in the SEC tournament bracket as the No. 12 seed. Mizzou opens play in Hoover, Ala., in the evening game Tuesday against No. 5 seed South Carolina (32-22, 17-13). The winner moves into double-elimination play and faces No. 4 seed Arkansas (37-7, 18-12) in the evening game Wednesday.
After a sluggish start for Mizzou’s lineup, Zach Hannah broke open a 2-2 tie in the seventh with a go-ahead solo home run, followed by Matt Berler’s two-run double. In his final game at Mizzou, senior Trey Harris closed the rally with his team-leading 11th home run, a three-run shot. MU starter Tyler LaPlante lasted five innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Nile Ball (2-1) was strong out of the bullpen, earning the win while allowing one run over four innings. The loss ended Tennessee’s season under first-year coach and St. Louisan Tony Vitello, who guided the Vols to a 29-27 record and 12-18 in the SEC.“I wouldn’t say there was a never a doubt, but I’m just really proud of these guys,” Missouri coach Steve Bieser said. “On senior day, all the emotions that start before the game and the guys being able to settle in and play a good ball game … it took us a little bit to get going.
