BRANSON MO NEWS: Former Missouri wrestling star J’den Cox earned a spot on the USA Wrestling men’s freestyle World Team with a win in his ‘Final X’ match Saturday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.Cox beat North Dakota State alum Hayden Zillmer at 92 kg without dropping a match, winning two straight in the best-of-three competition. He won the first match 5-2 and dominated the second at 10-0.Cox won a bronze medal at World Championships in the 86-kg weight class in 2017 but had to go through trials again when he elected to move up. He won bronze at 86 kg in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Saturday’s event, held at Lehigh University, featured another Missouri wrestler in rising redshirt junior Jaydin Eierman. Eierman beat Andy Simmons in a true-third matchup at 65 kg Saturday.“A true-third wrestle-off occurs when the overall runner-up and third-place finishers from last weekend’s Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament did not meet in the bracket,” according to USA Wrestling. “According to approved team selection procedures, the runner-up and third-place athlete must wrestle off to determine the No. 3 spot on the National Team.”Eierman beat Simmons by 9-5 decision to earn the spot. He will receive training from USA Wrestling and will have chances to represent the nation in overseas competition.Schweizer to compete Sunday in USATF Outdoor ChampsUrbandale, Iowa’s Karissa Schweizer is ready to run in what she called “my favorite stadium” Saturday on Twitter.Schweizer, who exhausted her eligibility at Missouri in the spring, will compete in the 5,000 meters at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at 3:22 p.m. Sunday.
