BRANSON, Mo. — Staff members of the St. Joseph News-Press won eight awards — including two first-place honors — in the 2016 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Missouri Press Foundation.“We are pleased to see this recognition, and to be reminded of how so many different reporters, editors and designers contribute to our success,” said Dennis Ellsworth, executive editor. “We are proud of all of their efforts.”The awards were announced Saturday at the conclusion of the 150th annual Missouri Press Association convention. The contest period was calendar year 2015. The News-Press entries competed against those from peer newspapers across the state.
The News-Press winners:First placeRay Scherer, Best Story About Rural Life or Agriculture, for reporting on the 125th anniversary of the St. Joseph Stockyards and the surrounding development.First placeGeorge Stanton, Best Information Graphic, for a detailed illustration of a baseball titled “Flat seam baseball comes to the MIAA.” This entry earlier also won first place in the Missouri Associated Press Managing Editors contest.Second placeKen Newton, Best Columnist-Humorous, for an entry under the headline “Fine point in the art of looting.”Third placeNews-Press staff, General Excellence.Third placeNews-Press staff, Best Editorial Pages.
