BRANSON MO NEWS:
Week 1 of Missouri’s district football tournaments kicks off Oct. 20, but Nixa will be sitting that one out.
The Eagles finished second in Class 5 District 5 and, along with top seed Carthage (6-3), will received a first-round bye. Willard (5-4) is third in the district standings, followed by Republic (3-6), Neosho (1-8) and Parkview (1-8).
Nixa (5-4) will host the winner of Willard vs. Parkview Oct. 27, while Carthage hosts Republic or Neosho.
Coach Rich Rehagen’s Eagles are 3-1 against the district field, with wins over Willard (41-27), Republic (31-26) and Neosho (21-20). Nixa lost to Carthage 46-14 Sept. 29. Carthage defeated Nixa in last year’s district championship game.
Ozark
A Week 4 loss to Branson knocked the Ozark out of Class 5 District 4’s top seed, but the Tigers will still host a tournament game.
Ozark finished with a higher point total than Branson, 32.6 to 23.28. But the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s automatic switch rules allow a lower seeded team to leapfrog the team ahead of it if that team was victorious over the other in the regular season. Branson, seeded 4th, edged Ozark, seeded third, 17-14 Sept. 8.
The switch rule also haunts Lebanon. The Yellow Jackets earned District 4’s best point total, but lost to Glendale 51-42 Sept. 8. That leaves the district’s final seeds as follows: 1. Glendale (5-4), 2. Lebanon (6-3), 3. Branson (3-6), 4. Ozark (5-4), 5. Waynesville (0-9), 6. Central (0-9).
Coach Chad Depee’s Tigers host Waynesville Oct. 20 and, with a win, would advance to a semifinal game at Glendale. The Falcons defeated Ozark in last fall’s district title game.
Ozark is 0-1 against the district field.
District championship games are scheduled for Nov. 4 and will be hosted by the best remaining seed.
