BRANSON MO NEWS: For Andrea Fuentes and Dariana Hollingsworth, Missouri volleyball’s trip to Puerto Rico is more than just a tournament on a beautiful island – it’s a homecoming.Fuentes and Hollingsworth both hail from San Juan, the territory’s capital, where the Tigers (2-1) will compete in the Puerto Rico Invitational this weekend.According to head coach Wayne Kreklow, scheduling to play in the girls’ hometown was not a coincidence.
“That’s kind of the driving force behind this tournament,” Kreklow said. “For them to be over here playing, that’s a big deal for all the Puerto Rican kids.”Fuentes looks forward to seeing her support system up in the stands. It’s a privilege she has seldom had since playing in high school.“It comes with pressure and responsibility,” the redshirt freshman said. “At the end of the day, you want them to look at you and be proud of you as a player and as an individual. You want them to know you’re doing your best to represent them and Puerto Rico.”For Hollingsworth, the opportunity is nerve-wracking. Puerto Rico will always be her biggest critic, the sophomore said, and one match could define her career in the eyes of the fans.“At the same time, it’s very exciting because I get to go with my teammates, and I get to go back to where I started,” she said. The matches are scheduled for later in the day. Both athletes said they hope they get a chance to show their teammates around.“Old San Juan is a must,” Fuentes said, citing the antique forts of El Morro and Castillo San Cristobal.
