Schweizer returning home to race in Drake Relays

BRANSON MO NEWS: Last weekend Missouri track and field coach Brett Halter described Karissa Schweizer as “one of the best athletes the community has ever had.”Her influence goes beyond the Missouri community, though.At 7:53 p.m. Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, Schweizer will compete in the 5,000-meter race in her home state at the Drake Relays.

“The Drake Relays holds a special place in my heart and it means the world for me to be able to come back to race in my hometown,” Schweizer said in a release from the Drake Relays. “If I were able to set a record at this year’s Relays, it would be the cherry on top to a long career of running on the Blue Oval!”The record at the Drake Relays is 15 minutes and 31.18 seconds. Schweizer’s personal best is 15:18.69.While Schweizer chases history on the track, there are a few notable field performances to keep up with at the event, which runs Thursday through Saturday.

Avery Carter will compete in the hammer throw and shot put, and Landon Cuskelly will compete in the men’s high jump. Both athletes had program top-10 marks at the Tom Botts Invitational this past weekend. Avery’s toss of 210 feet and 7 inches was third in program history. Cuskelly’s jump of 7 feet and 1¾ inches ranks fifth all-time in program history.Gabi Jacobs set a meet and facility record in the discus with a toss of 190 feet and 8 inches at the Tom Botts Invitational. Jacobs will throw the discus and shot put this weekend.The meet begins with track events at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. It recommences at 8:50 a.m. Friday, and field begins at 10 a.m. Field events start at 9 a.m. Saturday, while track events start at 9:30 a.m.
