Think over 50, think Guardian Angels. Think day trips or longer trips, think Guardian Angels. Think games, think fellowship and think prayer, think St. Mary’s Catholic Church Guardian Angels.

“Our charter is to entertain those over age 50 in our community,” said Larry Schlottman, a Guardian Angels board member. “This is not just a Catholic deal but a community group. It is open to everyone over age 50.”

The Guardian Angels began more than 10 years ago and focused on bingos and bake sales. No one remembers how the name came about, but perhaps the focus of tending to a flock of older adults that are most forgotten about in the community led to the name. No one knows for sure. Either way, the group has grown and thrived. It needs “younger” leaders with younger ideas, said the group of board members gathered last Friday night.

Bingo is still offered and a fan favorite, but it has grown to include dominoes, game days, a popular Valentine’s Dance and trips. Except for the trips and the dance, activities are free, such as domino day or bingo. The trip costs are the total for food, lodging and the bus ride.

One of the more popular trips was last year’s two-bus loads who went to Waco to tour the Magnolia. Other market trips included Branson, Missouri. This year, the group is going on to Savanah, Georgia, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8. That trip was booked to the maximum by the third month of registration. Now, there is a waiting list. Next year’s trip is already in the planning stages. The 2018 trip will be a wildflower and painted church tour.

The Valentine Dance is already set for Friday, Feb. 9. The cost for the community dance and concert, as it is billed, is $10 per person. It …
