Where the bridge forks: two roads to two very different winter day trips

BRANSON MO NEWS: This time of year, it gets especially difficult to coax out that adventurous spirit that seemed to thrive just a few warmer months ago. But there is hope. I happen to know of just the sort of activities best suited for the cooler days of the year.

Trip 1: Branson, Missouri

Many a childhood memory has been made celebrating the Christmas festivities in good ol’ Branson, Missouri. Branson is one of those places that isn’t like any place really. I find it most appealing as a social experiment. I don’t think there is a single better place for people watching. Also, there’s the whole historic aspect of it. Theme parks of yesteryear in an Ozark backdrop make it almost believable, immersive. Take that, along with the fact that the food is actually pretty tasty, and you’ve got yourself an all-out winter day trip for the ages.

Skip the interstate for the scenic route along historic highway Z, where you can enjoy the twisty, winding roads, historic train overpasses and rolling hills. Along the way you might notice the forked bridge, which opened in November of 1927. Its dramatic forked entrance over the James River is surrounded on either side by a rocky pier perfect for stopping and nabbing a picture.

Upon arrival in Branson, it’s straight to Silver Dollar City for me. In the winter time the amusement park is transformed into a Christmas kingdom with around eighty Christmas trees brought in from the surrounding area and every square inch glimmering with lights. It’s enough to make Grandma say, “You know, they do a really good job.” That they do Grandma. That they do.
