Yakov to return in 2018: Russian-born comedian sets out to ‘Make America Laugh Again’

BRANSON MO NEWS: Yakov Smirnoff, the Russian-born comedian who took the United States by storm in the 1980s and became one of the biggest stars in Ozark Mountain Country in the 1990s, announced he’d be returning to the Yakov Smirnoff Theatre for a limited run of shows in the fall of 2018.

The announcement came shortly after he personally helped representatives from the Missouri Neon Company replace the missing “K” from his “Yakov” sign, which was knocked down during a storm a while back.

“After touring the world over the last two years and being in Hollywood for a while now, I’ve been missing Branson,” Smirnoff said. “Today, I put the ‘K’ that’s been missing from my ‘Yakov’ sign back, and in 2018, I’m putting my show that’s been missing from my Branson theater back.

“It’s time to ‘Make America Laugh Again.’”

Smirnoff said, due to the current political climate, he’s found plenty of new material to thrill Branson audiences.

“It’s all new, and it’s all very funny,” Smirnoff said with a smile.

The comedian skyrocketed to fame in the 1980s in films like “Moscow on the Hudson,” “Brewster’s Millions,” and “The Money Pit,” as well as on TV shows like “Night Court.” He has also given command performances at the White House for several presidents and honored guests. President Ronald Reagan even called Smirnoff a “national treasure.”

In 1993, he became one of the most popular acts during the Branson boom years. Not only was Smirnoff one of the biggest “crossover” stars to hit Branson, he also became an integral part of the community as he was heavily involved in not-for-profit organizations, as well as a driving force behind several fundraisers.
