Better Business Bureau warns against timeshares
BRANSON MO NEWS: A recently released report from the Better Business Bureau is warning customers about the Missouri timeshare industry.The report, “Don’t Fall for Deception, Pressure and Traps Disguised as Vacations: A Better Business Bureau Study of the Missouri Timeshare/Vacation Club Industry,” states the Missouri Attorney General’s office received 1,256 complaints regarding timeshares in 2017. Focusing on the Branson area, the report states timeshares make up 5,274 of the 21,445 total resort and hotel rooms in the Tri-Lakes Area.Complaints about the timeshare industry to the BBB’s southwest Missouri office totaled 271 in 2017, down from the 327 total in both 2016 and 2015.
In particular, the report said timeshares have “a pattern of deceiving consumers with high-pressure sales tactics, oppressive contracts and poor customer service.”“While it can be tempting to exchange your time for a free or discounted show or resort stay during your visit to Branson, special offers by timeshare companies often hook you for a much larger commitment,” Michelle L. Corey, St. Louis BBB president and CEO, said in a statement. “These high-pressure and deceptive sales tactics take advantage of consumers’ excitement and vacation euphoria to saddle them with a souvenir they often end up regretting. This industry would benefit from establishing self-regulatory ethical standards to protect consumers and the reputation of Branson, Missouri.”In a statement, city officials said they wanted to thank the BBB for “bringing awareness to the topic.”“We whole-heartedly support the BBB’s initiative to ensure all travelers and guests are treated fairly, feel comfortable and receive good customer service,” the statement reads. “The city of Branson wants to ensure that all visitors are protected from any predatory sales tactics.”Branson Mayor Karen Best also provided a comment in the statement saying she, and the city, supports additional regulation at the state level.
