Cold weather beneficial for area animals

BRANSON MO NEWS: While the Tri-Lakes Area experienced an array of weather events last week from unseasonably warm to freezing temperatures and snow, a conservation specialist says animals are accustomed to Missouri weather.

John Miller, Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery visitor center manager, said there are some positive impacts for cold weather this time of year for animals such as owls. With leaves gone from trees, Miller said it is easier for owls to feed their young in nests, as well as spot food running around on the ground.

“It’s a good time for owls to get out and hunt mice,” Miller said.

Since native animals are adaptable to Missouri weather, no detrimental harm came from the snow, according to Miller. Cold weather is actually beneficial for animals in maintaining their body cycles, which will help them get ready for breeding season, according to Miller.

“The cold shouldn’t affect our normal winter residents,” Miller said.

One common misconception Miller wanted to clarify is about the migration of birds. He said birds migrate based on the length of days, and not by cold or warm temperatures. Birds notice the length of days in the fall and spring, which is how …
