Former MU standout MPJ headed to Denver
BRANSON MO NEWS: Michael Porter Jr. is going to be a Nugget.With the No. 14 pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets selected the former Missouri basketball standout.”I’m not entitled to this,” Porter said in an interview with ESPN. “Everything’s a blessing. I’m so excited. My path was a little bit different than everybody else’s, but I’m going to make sure this pick is the best pick they’ve ever made.”
While Porter was selected in the first round, the Columbia product slid after largely being predicted to be picked somewhere between No. 5 and No. 9. The most popular projected landing destination was the Chicago Bulls at No. 7, which took Duke’s Wendell Carter Jr. instead.Porter played just 53 total minutes as a freshman at Missouri after having a microdiskectomy procedure of his L3 and L4 spinal disks. He left the Tigers’ opening game against Iowa State after just 2 minutes, 7 seconds. Porter didn’t return until the SEC Tournament, and he struggled in his return there and in the Tigers’ lone NCAA Tournament game, a 67-54 loss to Florida State.

Still, Porter said he doesn’t intend on sitting out a season and expects to hit the hardwood for Denver this year. And, at No. 14 overall, Porter is the highest selected Tiger in the NBA Draft since Keyon Dooling, who was picked at No. 10 in 2000.Arizona’s Deandre Ayton was selected first overall by the Phoenix Suns, followed by Duke’s Marvin Bagley III to the Sacramento Kings. Real Madrid’s Luka Doncic, Michigan State’s Jaren Jackson Jr. and Oklahoma’s Trae Young rounded out the first five picks, going to the Atlanta Hawks, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Dallas Mavericks, respectively.
