Mariners draft Missouri lefty Plassmeyer in fourth round
BRANSON MO NEWS: Midway through his sophomore season at Missouri, pitcher Michael Plassmeyer lost his spot in the Tigers’ starting rotation. He finished with a 7.92 ERA in conference play and struck out just 24 batters.A year later, he’s getting yanked from Missouri’s rotation again, but the reason couldn’t be more different: The Seattle Mariners drafted him in the fourth round of the MLB Draft Tuesday.”My heart stopped for a second as the phone rang,” Plassmeyer said.
Plassmeyer had a breakout year as a junior. The former De Smet standout changed his curveball grip, and the pitch carved up SEC hitters. The 6-foot-2 lefthander posted a 3.05 ERA and struck out 103 batters, the third most of any SEC pitcher.The Mariners selected Plassmeyer with the No. 118 selection, which has an approximate pick value of $469,400. He was the first player picked from Missouri’s 2018 roster. Bryce Montes de Oca, a righthander taken by the Mets in the ninth round, was the only other Tigers player taken in Tuesday’s portion of the draft, which will resume Wednesday with rounds 11-40.Plassmeyer watched the draft at home with his parents and brother. His advisor said he could hear his name called anywhere from the fourth to eighth round, so he was thrilled to be picked as early as he was.Brian DeLunas — who coached Plassmeyer at Premier, Pitching and Performance Academy in St. Louis — now works as the Mariners bullpen coach. He said Assistant General Manager Jeff Kingston texted him Tuesday morning to ask about Plassmeyer.”When he did that, I kind of assumed that maybe the interest level was a little bit higher and that they would make a move on him,” the coach said.DeLunas, a former volunteer assistant with Missouri, texted Plassmeyer as soon as the 21-year-old was drafted.
