Missouri falls to South Carolina in SEC Tournament

BRANSON MO NEWS: In the fifth inning of Tuesday’s late-night game at the Southeastern Conference Tournament, the Missouri baseball team clung to a 2-1 lead against South Carolina.Coach Steve Bieser pulled sophomore starter TJ Sikkema and put in senior Andy Toelken with two men in scoring position and nobody out. Toelken worked excellently out of trouble, keeping the Gamecocks scoreless and getting three huge outs. But when Toelken loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, he couldn’t manage a repeat performance.

South Carolina tied the game on a bases-loaded walk, pulled ahead on a sacrifice fly and doubled its lead on an RBI single. The Gamecocks, the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament, held on to their 4-2 lead. No. 12-seeded Missouri saw its stay in Hoover, Alabama, last just one game.The Tigers, bounced out of the first round of the conference tournament, await their fate for the NCAA regionals.Sikkema falters in fifth, Toelken in seventhSikkema allowed just two hits through the four scoreless innings before his great start disintegrated in the fifth inning. He began the inning by giving up a double, a single and a run-scoring double. From there, Toelken came on and put out the fire. But he walked Carlos Cortes with the bases loaded in the seventh. Madison Stokes’ sacrifice fly and Jonah Bride’s RBI single built the South Carolina lead.

Missouri’s only two runs came in the fourth inning. Junior Brian Sharp’s groundout scored the first run, and freshman Chad McDaniel plated the second with a single.The Tigers notched only four hits in the ballgame.
