MU softball to face two top-15 teams in Mary Nutter Classic

BRANSON MO NEWS: With the 2018 season now in full swing, the Tigers (6-5) prepare to face a litany of quality competition, including two top-15 opponents, Thursday through Sunday in the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, California.Missouri enjoyed a successful trip to Clearwater, Florida, last weekend where it went 4-2 in the Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational. The Tigers found success thanks to an offensive breakout led by sophomore shortstop Braxton Burnside, juniorfirst baseman Rylee Pierce and junior third baseman Amanda Sanchez.Pierce smacked a team-leading three home runs in Florida and hit .600 for the weekend. Sanchez enjoyed another fruitful week at the plate in her return from injury, hitting .579 with a pair of home runs .

However, not everything went well for the Tigers last weekend. They were bit by the injury bug .In the third inning of Sunday morning’s win over Florida Atlantic, Burnside collapsed between first and second base and had to be helped off the field. The sophomore didn’t return to action in either of Missouri’s remaining Sunday contests.MU athletic trainer Brett Sigley said she suffered an ankle injury and would be taken to a local hospital for X-rays and further evaluation, according to a Twitter post on the team’s official account Sunday. It was announced Wednesday night that she is out with an ankle sprain, leaving a big hole to fill in the middle of the Tigers’ infield. Freshman Brooke Wilmes moved over from second base to shortstop after Burnside’s injury and hit two home runs.Assuming she sticks with Wilmes at shortstop again this series, interim coach Gina Fogue now has second base to fill. Freshman Kendyll Bailey, who covered second for Wilmes in the wake of Burnside’s injury, was hitless in six plate appearances with a pair of strikeouts …
