Preparing for a rainy day: Branson debuts renovated emergency operations center
BRANSON MO NEWS: With new technology, preparation kits and a fresh coat of paint, Branson city staff hope a newly renovated emergency operations center will have the city better prepared if disaster strikes.According to Ted Martin, fire chief for the city of Branson, the renovated space, which is located at Fire Station No. 1, will allow city and emergency management personnel to have a dedicated area with equipment to respond to emergency situations.“If another disaster happens, we’d immediately be able have our city department heads, including utilities and public works, and fire and police,” Martin said. “Plus bring in partners from the paramedic service and the hospital, plus maybe the Salvation Army or Red Cross. People that are working in the field to help control resources.
“In the other part of the fire station, we would have areas set up for planning, what’s going to happen in the next 12-hour operational period. Do we need to call the National Guard, do we need extra dump trucks or extra law enforcement support? Plus command and control, we’d have the local governing body involved. It’s just a nice space now to work on the emergency management process, which is truly preparedness.”One of the most important features of the center, according to Martin, is the city’s ability to communicate directly with emergency management groups throughout the area to coordinate during emergencies. Different boards and screens in the room, Martin said, allow those in the center to display up-to-date data and information.“We have a direct link with the National Weather Service through a program called ‘National Weather Service Chat,’” Martin said. “We get to join all our emergency management partners, our live broadcast media, that we can report what is happening in our community with the weather or they …
