State receives award for fishing program

The Missouri Department of Conservation recently received the Sport Fish Restoration Outstanding Project Award from the American Fisheries Society for the creation of the statewide Discover Nature — Fishing angler education program.The award was given by American Fisheries Society which is the oldest and largest organization dedicated to strengthening the fisheries profession, advancing fisheries science and conserving fisheries resources.Andrew Branson, fisheries programs specialist, said MDC’s Discover Nature — Fishing program started in 2014 with the aim to introduce families and youth to the sport. The program is composed of four separate lessons given by a volunteer instructor and provides an opportunity for attendees to fish at a public waterway.

Branson said the program is free to attend and the conservation department has held around 1,200 classes and there are over 300 trained fishing volunteers that serve as instructors.In addition, the Salvation Army Outdoors Initiative has adopted the state program created by the conservation department as their fishing education program to be used nationally at their facilities.Branson said the Discover Nature Fishing curriculum is able to be adjusted for different groups.He said the Discover Nature Fishing program can be used for youth groups and schools.The program is currently being offered to schools in Missouri through the conservation department’s Discover Nature Schools program for middle school students.

“The middle school curriculum now includes the Discover Nature Fishing Program and is available for teachers to use in their classrooms,” Branson said.He said the public events are separated into four lessons and are designed for families. Topics cover how to bait a hook, handle a fish and select the proper equipment.“By the time families finish the entire Discover Nature Fishing Program, they will have met with the fishing volunteers and experienced hands-on fishing on four different occasions,” Branson said. “ …
