THE HOLT REPORT: College World Series shaping up to be good one
BRANSON MO NEWS: While on a recent vacation to Branson, Missouri, a couple of T-shirts worn by people exploring bargains at one of the town’s spacious shopping centers caught my attention.The red T-shirts featured Arkansas near the top and written in the center was Omahogs. I thought it was a clever T-shirt idea since the Razorbacks had qualified for the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. But, that’s a Razorback nickname that’s been in use several years.Many of those T-shirts were likely on display Monday night and again Tuesday night in Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park as Arkansas plays in the College World Series championship game for only the second time in school history. The Hogs, CWS runner-up in 1979, is after the school’s first CWS championship.
Oregon State’s orange and black school colors are abundant as the Beavers seek their third CWS championship after winning back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.Arkansas and Oregon State appear evenly matched. Each displayed offensive firepower in the CWS and both are led by successful, seasoned coaches – the Hogs’ Dave Van Horn, who is into his 16th season at Arkansas, and the Beavers’ Pat Casey, who is into his 23rd season at Oregon State.Entering the finals, Arkansas’s team batting average was .302 with 98 team home runs. The Razorbacks’ team earned run average was 3.55. Oregon State’s team batting average was .322, with 65 team homers. The Beavers’ team ERA was 3.33. …Locally, future Oklahoma State student-athletes and a Stillwater Lady Pioneer were honored, along with other Tulsa area athletes, during the Tulsa World’s 2018 All-World Awards banquet last Saturday night. Chris Harris, a former multi-sport star at Bixby High and current defensive back with the Denver Broncos, was guest speaker.
